News and Commentary: A New Collection From MCC!

Posted on August 21, 2026August 21, 2026 by MidCenturyCinema

Greetings all: we’re checking in with a short notice today, to make an announcement, and to test the new automatic e-mail alert system. (The old one crashed, but thanks to our brilliant web-mistress we seem to be up and running again.) In the interim you probably missed this post on The Best of 1976; and we should also mention that over on That ‘70s Movie Podcast, recent episodes on Jaws and Night Moves have been especially popular.

As for the announcement: when the first X-Files movie was released, David Duchovny described it as “having the opportunity to pay for something you’ve been getting for free.” The same can be said of our new book, Kirshner on Cinema, a collection of my movie-related writings. You already have access to almost all on them, one click away on the Mid Century Cinema site, under the “Books, Essays, and More” tab. But in the spirit of my charter membership in the “Luddites of America” society, I wanted to have a physical record of them all gathered in one place, especially because many of them, such as those that appeared in The Boston Review, The Los Angeles Review of Books, Bright Lights Film Journal and The New Left Review were on-line only—and who knows if this whole internet thing is just a passing fad.

As you can see from the pics of the table of contents below, the book is organized into four sections, reflecting my weakness for alliteration: Films, Filmmakers, Folios, and Fragments. The first two I suspect are self-explanatory. Folios refers to writings that related to books (such as reviews, my interviews with David Thomson and Phillip Lopate, and my most excellent long form essay on Norman Mailer). Fragments features some selected thematic posts from MCC.

Here are the details (On amazon there is a generous “look inside” feature as well):
